Goodbye to a Familiar Stranger

The waitress at the restaurant smiles as I approach the cash register to pay.
“Hi.” she says.
“Hi.” I say. “I’m moving to Taiwan next month.”
“Really? For how long?”
“A year or two, at least.”
“Wow. How long have you been in Japan?”
“Ten years.”
“You’re half Japanese!” She put her hand in front of her face and made a motion of splitting it in half.
“That’s right – I’m going to Taiwan with a set of Japanese sensibilities.”
“Then, you’ll be working through some culture shock?”
“Yeah, a little.” I smile. Customers have lined up behind me to pay.
“Do you want your receipt?”
“Sure.”
“Come back and see us.”
“I will.”
